Girls Swimming: LaPorte takes pair at Crown Point

Stepping up to the starting block the flashbacks began for Chesterton junior Julia Campbell, reliving her already competitive tenure in the 200 and 500 free. Along the train of thought came the images of her Duneland rival Carly Jackson of LaPorte.
And much like the montage of conference, sectional and state meet moments was the heated race she had at that very moment. This time, every point was crucial against a largely improved Crown Point team.
“Yeah, I just have those old races in my head I guess,” Campbell said after wins in both distance races and a leg of the 400 free relay that helped clinch a 100-86 decision over CP.
On the boys side, the differential was much steeper as the Trojans routed the Bulldogs 132-54.
For years the region’s premier rivalry has been Chesterton and Munster, so when the Bulldogs (1-1-1) were part of a rare 93-93 tie with Munster two weeks ago, the Chesterton girls knew this one would be tough. And when Crown Point took a four-point lead after diving, the pressure was on.
“(When doing) the 500 free, I knew we needed the points,” Campbell said. “Any point we could squeak out.”
Inevitably, depth (including Olivia Kabacinski’ three firsts) leading to second and third places proved the difference.
“They had a lot more touch outs than us and they have more depth than us,” CP coach Bryon Angerman said.
Chesterton boys (2-0) and girls (4-0) coach Kevin Kinel was happy to bring home a pair of DAC victories.
“What I’m excited about is we rose to the occasion and had really good times,” he said.
CP girls freshman Aly Tetzloff contributed to four wins, including the school record of 57.14 in the fly. Chesterton’s Blake Pieroni’s also had four firsts, including a pool record 46.36 in the 100 free.
