Crete-Monee’s bats heat up in win

The weather wasn’t the only thing heating up Tuesday. Crete-Monee’s bats did as well. The Warriors cruised past Rich South 21-5 in a five-inning Southland clash in Richton Park.
After dropping a game to Southland foe Bloom 11-1 in their previous outing, the Warriors took out their aggression on the Stars.
“We had a lot of big hits and it was good for us,” Crete-Monee coach Sue Giannantonio said. “On hot days like this and after a loss, you really see what your kids are made of.
“We did what we were supposed to do.”
Crete-Monee (10-12, 8-4) didn’t waste any time, sending eight batters to the plate in the top of the first, scoring four runs. Melanie Lambert (1-for-1, 3 RBI) hit a sacrifice fly and Ashley Czernik smashed a three-run homer in the frame.
“It was my first home run of the season and it was in a big conference win, so all-around it was a good game,” Czernik (2-for-4) said. “We always take defense, defense, defense from every game.
Rich South could have used some defense, committing four errors to go along with a couple of misplayed balls, allowing 12 Crete-Monee batters up to the plate and nine runners to cross it in the top of the second. Two of those runs came on a double by Kori Poces (5-for-5, 5 RBI, 4 runs), who hit for the cycle, and two more came on a bunt single by Alexis LaBauex (2-for-2, 2 RBI, 2 runs).
Even with five hits, Poces, like the rest of the Warriors, was thinking defense — and the fact she had the lone error for the Warriors.
“We got our hits down finally and we just pulled together,” Poces said. “We’re always prepared for the next game, whether we win or lose.
“I did have one error, so I’ll need to fix that.”
Crete-Monee would send 12 hitters to the plate in the third, scoring eight more runs, led by Poces’ two-run homer and RBI single in the frame.
“We’re always one pitch or one hit away from being in games,” Rich South coach Mike Rucker said. “All I ask is that they play hard, and they did.”
The Stars (4-9, 4-8) were led by Bria McClellan (1-for-3, 3 RBI, run).
