Catholic honors

Not many football players go both ways in the Catholic League Blue. Mount Carmel senior Brandon Greer not only played running back and defensive back, he did both at a high level and that’s why he won the conference’s Tony Lawless Player of the Year award. Greer, who has committed to Central Michigan, has 95 carries for 1,027 yards and 11 touchdowns. Defensively, he has 28 tackles and three pass break-ups. Loyola quarterback Malcolm Weaver and Brother Rice running back Martez Walker shared the Blue Offensive MVP award, St. Rita linebacker Will McNamara won the Defensive MVP and Loyola’s John Holecek was named Tony Lawless Coach of the Year. Also earning Catholic League Player of the Year honors were Bishop McNamara quarterback Channing Dolliger in the White Division and Gordon Tech quarterback Julian Russell in the Red Division.

IHSA changes?

It’s the time of year when Illinois High School Association members start to consider changes to the organization’s bylaws. The process starts with the submission of proposals — which go before the IHSA Legislative Commission — are debated at town hall meetings and then voted on by IHSA members in November and December. Among the changes proposed: allowing football teams to play controlled scrimmages against other schools a week before the season openers, starting football practice two days earlier on Monday, rather than on Wednesday, letting private schools with enrollments of 200 or less to form co-op teams and moving girls lacrosse from the spring to the fall.

Record ending

Crete-Monee’s Carlos Posada’s soccer career ended Wednesday with the Warriors’ 5-4 loss to Bremen in a Class 2A sectional semifinal. Posada, who passed Brother Rice’s Billy Savarino for the state’s all-time scoring lead this season, had 67 goals this year to boost his career total to 176. Posada’s fall isn’t over, however. He’s also the kicker for the Warriors’ 9-0 football team.
