Hoop scoop

Three-time defending state champ Bolingbrook edged out Young for the top spot in the Associated Press Class 4A girls basketball rankings released this week. Rounding out the Class 4A top 10 in voting by a statewide panel of sportswriters and broadcasters are: Maine South, Edwardsville, Marist, Waubonsie Valley, Bartlett, Trinity, Zion-Benton and Fenwick. Two-time defending champ Montini is No. 1 in Class 3A, followed by Hillcrest, Springfield, Champaign Centennial, Peoria Central, Breese Mater Dei, Marshall, Morgan Park, Grayslake Central and St. Joseph. The top-ranked small-school teams are Quincy Notre Dame (2A) and Cowden-Herrick (1A).

Team Rose Classic

Curie will host the Team Rose ­Classic boys basketball shootout on Dec. 11 at Collins. The day tips off at 10 a.m. and features six games: Collins vs. Von Steuben, Carver vs. DuSable, Marshall vs. Providence St. Mel, Farragut vs. Riverside-Brookfield, Curie vs. Decatur MacArthur and Crane vs. H-F.

Eagles soar

Sandburg’s wrestling is ranked No. 1 in the state in Class 3A by The Illinois Best Weekly. Rounding out the top five are Minooka, Oak Park-River Forest, Harlem and defending champ Glenbard North. Montini, which has won four consecutive state titles overall (the last three in Class 2A), is top-ranked in 2A. Sterling Newman is No. 1 in Class 1A.

Staying home

Loyola University’s softball recruiting class has a strong local flavor. Signing with the Ramblers were Richards middle infielder Hannah Jenkins, Downers South catcher/utility player Katy LaCivita, Naperville Central pitcher Kristina Vizza and Neuqua Valley outfielder Kat Widup.

Hales Hoops

Hales will face national powerhouse Oak Hill Academy at the Marshall County Hoopfest in Benton, Ky., on Dec. 2. The three day event is one of the top shootouts in the country.
