Blustery winds didn’t prevent Conant senior Toni Graham from blowing away her competition at the 76th annual Palatine Relays.
The Alabama signee was named the outstanding female athlete of the meet after winning all four of her events. Running into the wind, Graham took the 100-meter dash in 12.0 seconds. She also captured the 200 dash in a personal-best 24.7. Both times were just a tenth off the meet record (she shares the 100 mark).
‘‘The 100 time was kind of weird because I felt like I was running 11.8, 11.7 and then it said 12 flat,’’ Graham said. ‘‘But running into the wind isn’t a big obstacle for me because I just put my head down and drive.’’
Graham also anchored fellow seniors Brianna Millar, Emily Quinones and Destiny Arps to victory in the 400 and 800 relays. The Cougars had the lead in both when Graham got the baton.
‘‘I don’t want to go to the University of Alabama without at least one gold medal around my neck,’’ Graham said. ‘‘If we can come home [from state] with four gold medals, we’re solid.’’
Barrington won the team title with 129 points, 17 more than Palatine.
Palatine’s Tim Williams was named outstanding male performer, winning the 100 in 10.9 and the 200 in 21.8. Teammate Mat Smoody prevailed in the 800 run (1:56.3), where he is the defending state champion, and the 1,600 (4:20.8) to help the Pirates win the team title with 142 points.
