Senior Brandon Riggi scored a game-high 24 points to lead Gardner-South Wilmington past host Coal City 48-43 in the Coaler Turkey Tournament on Tuesday night.
The Panthers scored half of their total points (24) in the fourth quarter.
“We were a little shaky in the beginning being that it is our first game but our coach said to win the game you do it with defense,” Riggi said.
GSW (1-0) also got contributions from juniors Dalton Wright (eight points) and Hunter Eutesy (eight points).
The Panthers shot only 35 percent (15-for-43) from the floor but made their mark from the free-throw line, converting on 15-of-21 attempts.
“The only way that we are going to win is to play aggressive defense, run and shoot and score,” GSW coach Russ Gilmour said.
Coal City (0-1) was led by senior Matt Halloran, who scored 22 points. Jon West and Brennen Shentina added eight and six points, respectively.
Halloran had the hot hand for Coal City early as he matched the Panthers’ first-quarter team total with 12 points and was the only Coaler to score.
“Our guys just have to be more aggressive out there,” Coal City coach Brad Boresi said. “We can move Matt inside or outside and overall I think he had a pretty good game. That said, if he (Halloran) has to carry us every game we won’t be very good.”
Coal City held GSW without a point for nearly eight minutes in the second half and led 33-27 with 5:30 remaining.
Riggi then took over, hitting three straight free throws and later hitting consecutive baskets to put GSW up 38-35 with just under three minutes left.
A late three-pointer by Halloran cut the deficit to 44-41 with 18 seconds left before the Panthers closed it out from the free-throw line.
St. Bede 59, Morris 48: St. Bede (1-0) finished the game on an 11-2 run and got 13 points from junior Damin Smith and 12 from Brad Groleau. Junior Jake Olson scored a game-high 21 points to lead Morris (0-1).
