After sleep-walking through the first quarter, Chicago Christian’s offense woke up and rolled to a 35-14 victory over Walther Lutheran Saturday afternoon in Melrose Park.
"We hurt ourselves with drops and we missed some blocks early," Chicago Christian senior quarterback Alex Haan said.
Haan rushed for 148 yards and passed for 149 more as the Knights (8-1, 6-1 Private School League) won their seventh straight.
The Knights fell behind 7-0 when Dan Green (19 carries, 96 yards) scored on a 10-yard run on the first play of the second quarter. But Chicago Christian struck quickly and tied the game when Dan Merrick (19 carries, 101 yards) capped a 61-yard drive with a four-yard touchdown run with 10:04 remaining in the half.
Haan went to work four minutes later, putting the Knights up 14-7 after completing a 33-yard touchdown to Scott Gilman.
Chicago Christian put the game away as Haan threw a five-yard touchdown to Matt Hull, and Merrick scored on a two-yard run.
Haan's final touchdown pass went to Andy Stuursma, and Green's 23-yard run put the the Broncos (6-3, 5-2) on the board for a second time.
