CROWN POINT -- Chesterton's Mark Gore is amazed how high Mavrick Tumblin can jump.

"He can jump like crazy,'' Gore said.

As it turned out during Wednesday night's 2-1 Duneland Athletic Conference win over Crown Point, it's a good thing Tumblin can sky.

The sophomore forward's vertical paid big dividends as he soared high and scored what proved to be the winning goal on a header off the initial shot by Cole Galloway.

"Cole told me: 'I'm so glad you made that back post run,' '' said Tumblin, who scored his first goal this season.

"My vertical is about 25 inches -- higher when I run and jump. Cole crossed it to me. It felt amazing. Seeing it hit the back of the net blew my mind.''

After being shut out for nearly 70 minutes by CP's good defense and the goaltending of Alex Menn, Gore managed to tie the game at 1-1 with a 25-yard floater over the Bulldogs' goalie.

"That was a great shot,'' CP coach Jeff Fairbairn said. "It looked like it was going to go past the post, but then it came back and hooked in at the last second.''

Gore's goal was his first of the season and eased some of the frustration he's felt at times on offense.

"I missed two opportunities in the first half and I hit the post once in each half,'' Gore said. "We just wanted to come in here and get the win -- get some respect. We talked about it as a team. We knew what we had to do coming in and we did it.''

Chesterton coach Jamie Sensibaugh was pleased the Trojans (4-2-1, 2-1) were able to snatch the road win.

"We possessed the ball most of the time, but we almost got beat,'' he said. "That's soccer -- there's little or no margin for error. I thought their keeper (Menn) did a nice job tonight.''

The loss was a frustrating one for the Bulldogs (3-3, 2-1), who played well and basically controlled the game before the Trojans scored two goals in a span of 1:48

"They're a tough team, but tonight was another example of how well we can play,'' Fairbairn said. "Hopefully, we'll learn from this game, move on, and continue to improve. That's the main goal right now.''
