CHESTERTON -- Munster had one goal in mind Saturday, to avenge the losses of previous years to Chesterton. And that is exactly what the Mustangs did.
A dominant first half led to Munster's 3-1 victory over Chesterton in nonconference boys soccer action.
After losing to Chesterton the last few years, the Mustangs came out focused and hungry for a victory.
"They have taken it to us the last couple of years so we had to be very prepared and disciplined, had to come out and play," Munster coach Jim Prasopoulos said. "And I challenged my team to show up and I am very proud of everyone that played today. We played a great Duneland team, a well-coached team, a team that was state runner-up last year and we knew we had to be prepared otherwise you'll be embarrassed."
Munster (5-1), came out strong to take an early 1-0 lead thanks to a quick goal by senior Matt Goodman. That goal, along with two spectacular goals by junior Derek Carlson, capped off the Mustangs' stellar first half.
"We knew it would be a hard game from the get-go," Carlson said. "And the fact that they beat us the last few years, we just wanted to show we are a good team and we are happy with the win."
Chesterton (3-2-1) uncharacteristically never got its offense going in the first half and battled to keep Munster away from its goal.
A stern pep talk by the Chesterton coaching staff seemed to put a fire under the Trojans and they came out much more aggressive in the second half. On a free kick from Joe Michalak, Cole Galloway drove the ball into the net for the Chesterton goal.
But it was too little and too late for the Trojans, as Munster held on for the victory.
"A tale of two halves," said Chesterton coach James Sensibaugh. "We got it taken to us in the first half, and after a conversation at half, we came back and played more like Chesterton soccer with more consistency, but it just wasn't enough to win. Munster is an organized team that played consistently today. We don't typically have games like this and we will work be more consistent the rest of the year."
