Cary-Grove had little problem getting by Dundee-Crown 49-0 in Fox Valley Valley conference play on Friday in Cary. Quinn Baker scored two touchdowns and threw for one more to lead the Trojans. The win clinched an IHSA playoff berth for the Trojans for the eighth straight year.

“We responded from losses early in the season to show we are a good team,” said Baker (154 yards on 23 carries). “We got a lot of good things going and we been scoring big points. We are in a good place now … It comes down to our confidence.”

The Trojans (6-2, 3-2) scored on its first possession. Patrick O’Malley (35 yards on 10 carries) scored on a one-yard run with just under six minutes into the first quarter. Baker connected with Corey Laktas for a 25-yard pass and a touchdown to end the first quarter 14-0.

The assault continued in the second quarter with the Trojans scoring three touchdowns on a seven-yard run by Baker, a six-yard run by Connor Carlson (96 yards on seven carries), and a one-yard run by Baker to close the half with the Trojans owning comfortable lead 35-0.

Carlson scored his second touchdown on an 11-yard run in the third and Kaene Connington scored on a 15-yard run in the fourth quarter to close out the scoring.

“I feel like we are hitting our stride,” said Trojan Coach Brad Seaburg. “We’ve gotten healthy and we’re playing pretty good football right now.”

Quarterback Garrett Ryan (2-for-6 for 30 yards) returned to the lineup, following an injury to his shoulder, but could not move the Chargers offense against the No. 22 ranked Trojans. The Chargers (0-8) could only manage seven yards rushing in the first half. It was the 25th consecutive loss for the Chargers dating back to 2009.

“Our program isn’t where (the Cary Grove) program is,” said Charger Coach Vito Andriola. “That’s a state program and that’s where we want to be. Early in the game we had some off-sides, missed assignments … those are thing that happen. We played hard but we are not where that team is.”

Ryan Mahoney had 30 yards on 7 carries for the Trojans.
