Simeon storms by Carver

It was a short night’s work for Simeon as it defeated Carver 43-0 in the first round of the Public League playoffs Thursday night at Gately Stadium. The Wolverines (7-2), winners of seven straight, scored on their first four possessions and six of their first eight, as they built a 43-0 lead at half time.
The lead stood up as Simeon played without any regulars the entire second half.
Also missing the game were standouts lineman Jordan Diamond and quarterback Robert Gregory, both nursing ankle injuries. Gregory’s replacement Elcee Burke stepped in and the Wolverine offense did not miss a beat, as Burke threw three touchdown passes, a 15-yard score to Jeroid Jenkins, a 10-yard screen pass to John Gardner, and a 20-yard scoring toss to Cynettie Brown.
Darell Thomas scored on a 30-yard run, Sharoid Roach scored on a 40-yard run and Jordan Jackson finished the scoring with a touchdown from seven yards out.
“I know I had big shoes to fill, but when my number is called I try to do my job,” said Burke. “The coaches and the team all have confidence in me.” Burke was 5 of 7 for 65 yards and three touchdowns and Jackson had seven rushes for 82 yards.
“We just kept Robert and Jordan out for precautionary reasons,” said Simeon coach Dante Culbreath. “Elcee has done a great job, especially with the number of reps he gets doing the week.”
Despite the loss, Carver (3-6) coach Fred Ward was pleased with his team.
“Simeon is a great team and we wish them much success the rest of the season,” said Ward. “We know that we are capable of playing with the big boys and we must continue to get better.”
