Benet bows out with loss to Carmel
The Jordan Kos Show overshadowed what Benet had hoped would be a high-scoring senior night for the Redwings.
Instead, Kos (18 carries for 149 yards) ran for three touchdowns in a 42-7 Carmel win in the East Suburban Catholic showdown. Corsairs quarterback Brian Brennan scored the other two Carmel touchdowns, with both coming on the ground.
Benet (1-8, 0-8 ESCC) trailed 42-0 with 36 seconds to go in the third quarter when junior QB Mike Zebold connected with classmate Jack Euritt for a 55-yard TD pass.
“I knew the ball was coming to me,” Euritt said. “(He) told me that he was going to be throwing it deep to me, so I expected it and he threw it out there in front of me and I just went up and made a play.”
The Corsairs (6-3, 6-2) jumped out to a 28-0 halftime lead, thanks to a Brennan 3-yard run late in the first quarter and Kos runs of 9, 9 and 22 yards in the second quarter. Mike Panico, like Kos a Carmel senior, scored on a 4-yard play early in the third and Brennan capped the Corsairs scoring with a 1-yard run later in the quarter.
“Our offense has been pretty good all year long, we’re averaging about 40 points a game,” Carmel coach Andy Bitto said. “What I was happy with was the way our defense played. We kept them in check.”
Tom Abbene had two interceptions for the Corsairs.
Benet’s Zebold threw 25 passes for the night, completing 11.
Redwings senior Mike Odom (38 yards on six carries) did all of his damage in the first half. He will be one of the many upperclassmen Benet will miss next year.
“They’re a dedicated group of guys, and they love to play,” Benet coach Pat New said. “Those guys love being part of a team and they’re very close with one another and I respect the heck out of them.”
