An instant classic.

Thanks to some magical quarterback play from junior Ian Woodworth, visiting Marist pulled out an unbelievable 64-63 double overtime victory over Carmel on Friday night.

The 6-foot, 163-pound QB completed 33 of 51 passes for 452 yards. He threw eight touchdown passes.

Eight, as it turned out, was just enough. In the second overtime, on 4th-and-goal at the Carmel 25, Woodworth threw a touchdown pass to Nic Weishar to cut the lead to 63-62. He then won the game by completing another

pass on the two-point conversion.

Marist, which improved to 6-2 overall and 6-1 in the East Suburban Catholic Conference, finished the game with 542 yards. The team’s lone non-passing touchdown was scored by Peter Andreotti, a three-yarder in the second quarter.

Carmel’s offense also was impressive. The Corsairs (5-3, 5-2) finished the game with 491 yards, including 439 on the ground.

Quarterback Brian Brennan rushed 14 times for 97 yards and three touchdowns.

And the senior added 52 yards in the air (3-5). Two of his tosses went for touchdowns.

His biggest pass came in the second overtime, when he connected with Michael Panico on a 14-yard score on third down.

Brennan also scored in the first overtime on a one-yard run on fourth down.

Senior running back Jordan Kos was the story in the first quarter, when he ripped off a pair of long touchdown runs (71 and 62) to give the Corsairs an early 21-0 advantage. Kos, who is the school’s second leading all-time

rusher, had touchdown runs of 71 and 62 yards. He ended the night with 275 yards on only 23 carries.

Brennan’s other TD pass went to Jack Schoen (21 yards).

The other downside for Carmel was an injury to senior defensive back J.C. Pawlak on the final play of the game. He was taken away by ambulance.
