Carmel's boys volleyball team has rocketed out of blocks this spring, posting a pair of impressive victories.

The Corsairs opened the campaign with a victory over Lakes on Monday, and then moved way up in class and still prevailed over highly-regarded Lake Forest 16-25, 25-17, 25-20 at home on Wednesday in a nonconference match.

It was the season opener for the Scouts, which might have explained their uneven play.

"We made too many mistakes ... too many over-passes ... too many unforced errors," said second-year Lake Forest coach Marla Day. "Bottom line, it was two competitive teams but we didn't do the things we need to do to win. We have to play to our strengths and we didn't do that enough tonight."

Lake Forest was led by Kris Hawkins (15 kills) and Kyle Moore (8 kills).

Andrew Carr had 21 assists, and Mike Simet had four blocks.

The feeling was more upbeat on the other side of the net, where Carmel coach Kevin Nylen may have the start of something here.

"We needed to see how we're going to respond after losing the first game, and we responded well," he said. "We didn't serve-receive very well in the first game, but did a much better job in the last two games."

After losing Game 1, and controlling Game 2, Lake Forest traded leads with Carmel in the decisive game. It eventually worked its way to 17-17 before Carmel took control with a four-point run. Lake Forest didn't win a point on serve the rest of the way.

For the match, the Corsairs were led by captain Mike Fitzgibbons (10 kills), Frankie Cohen (7 kills) and Anthony Rengers (5 kills).

Setting for Carmel was Alex Dunlap (28 assists).

"It was a wild one," said Nylen. "Every time we play Lake Forest, it seems like it is. I'm glad we finally won one."
