New-look Gavit runs over Calumet

A new found enthusiasm coupled with a new spread offense seemed to be the right ingredients for success at Gavit as the Gladiators captured their first win of the season with a 47-7 win over host Calumet.

Gavit first-year coach Robert Robinson brought with him a passion to win that has spread among the Gladiators. That along with an exciting offensive attack have shown signs early that it could be an exciting year at Gavit.

“Nothing builds enthusiasm better than a solid win like tonight’s win, it takes the hard work that was done through the summer and shows it is worth it with the performance we got from our entire team especially the offensive line,” Robinson said.

Gavit’s success was due to a solid running game led by sophomore Tashon Rogers and freshman Dante Adams. Rogers rushed for 123 yards and three touchdowns on 17 carries, and Adams had 139 yards and two touchdowns on 10 carries.

“We came in here as a team and played as a team and the offensive line deserves a lot of credit for the openings they produced for Dante and I,” Rogers said. “We came in here as the underdogs and with the guidance of our coaches we have built a desire to win and will work hard on making that happen this year.”

Calumet got on the board early in the first when senior Marquis Carlton broke loose on the first play from scrimmage for a 55-yard touchdown run for the early 7-0 lead.

Gavit answered with Rogers finding Ezell Dennis open for a 14-yard touchdown pass. The kick was blocked, bringing the score to 7-6.

Gavit hit the rushing attack in the second quarter as the Gladiators scored three touchdowns to take a commanding 26-7 lead into the locker room.

Gavit accounted for three more scores in the second half and shutting down the Calumet offense holding them to the one touchdown throughout the game.

“We are young and inexperienced and we know that, but we will continue to work hard,” Calumet coach Ivan Zimmer said.
