GARY -- There is something almost divine about first-year Andrean coaches who can guide their flock to postseason fortunes.
With the 59ers' 46-6 victory in Friday night's sloppy first-round 3A Sectional 17 matchup against Calumet, Phil Mason is a step closer to joining an exclusive fraternity.
As the opening half was delayed from 90 minutes as the result of three stoppages due to lightning, the 59ers (4-6) completely took Calumet out of synch rather early.
Senior tailback Kyle Kovach rushed for three touchdowns and caught another on a 22-yard flare pattern from junior quarterback Richard Schmidt.
In all, Calumet (7-3) lost five fumbles and never could get on track as Andrean sloshed its way to a 34-0 advantage with 6:36 still remaining in the first half.
The contest finally ended at 10:39 pm. as rain finally showed signs of letting up.
In the tough conditions, Schmidt did a very effective job of managing the 59ers offense, which registered nearly 300 yards while limiting the Warriors to under 100 yards for the first time all season.
Senior Darcell Ballentine put the Warriors on the scoreboard with a 63-yard run before halftime.
