Burlington Central is starting to get things going at the right time of the season. After struggling during the holidays, the Rockets have won three in a row, including Tuesday’s 55-43 nonconference victory over visiting Sycamore.

Ray Hunnicutt scored 19 points and added nine rebounds to lead Burlington Central (11-8).

“I knew if I drove to the basket I would be able to find people open because the defense would collapse towards me,” said Hunnicutt. “Sometimes I couldn’t find anyone open so I had to take it in myself and was able to hit shots.”

“We need to see Ray drive and facilitate more,” Burlington Central coach Brett Porto said. “Tonight he did that and we as a team executed a lot better inside.”

Junior Bryce Warner added nine points and sophomore Duncan Ozburn added 10 rebounds for the Rockets.

Sycamore (4-14) was able to hang with Burlington Central most of the night, but was hurt by turnovers and missed shots.

“I was happy with how our team played for the most part tonight,” said Sycamore coach Jeff Hillmer. “We hung on to the ball pretty well, but turned the ball over at really bad times. It wasn’t so much the amount of turnovers, it was more the timing of them.”

Sycamore was led by Devin Mottet, who scored 14 points and added 11 rebounds.  Scott Nelson added nine more for the Spartans.

The Rockets are off now for 10 days. Porto likes how his team is playing heading into the final stretch.

“We are a deep team and I think that will help us in the rest of the conference season and in regionals,” said Porto. “If we can defend like we did the past few games we will be in good shape.”
