Mike Tauchman used his legs.
Dane Keelan used his head.
The anatomy of Fremd's 42-41 overtime win over visiting Barrington Friday night could be distilled thusly: Tauchman, Fremd's senior quarterback, rushed for 152 yards, including the Vikings' lone TD in OT; classmate Keelan, a defensive tackle/defensive end, had blocked Barrington's PAT try in OT with his helmet before the Vikes' possession in OT.
"I heard it bounce off my helmet," said the 6-foot-1, 226-pound Keelan, smiling.
Vikings senior Brett Opitz made his PAT, giving him two game-winning kicks in four weeks. His field goal was the difference in a win over Schaumburg on Sept. 26.
Fremd (6-2, 3-1) nearly won the thrilling MSL West game 35-32 in regulation, but a late fumble was recovered by Barrington (6-2, 2-2), and senior Ryan Murach booted a 26-yard field with 4.2 seconds remaining.
Tauchman's 30-yard TD run and an Opitz PAT had given Fremd a 28-17 lead in the final minute of the third quarter.
But Barrington senior running back Sam Ojuri had a quick answer, returning the ensuing kickoff 94 yards for a TD.
"Another storied game between Fremd and Barrington," Broncos coach Joe Sanchez said. "I was proud of the way our kids fought, of the way they kept fighting after we found ourselves down 28-17."
Barrington senior linebacker Brad Jackson, filling in for injured Alex Smith, recovered two fumbles and returned his block of a punt 10 yards for a TD in the second quarter.
