No Brian Urban? No problem for Buffalo Grove's boys soccer team.
But the short-handed Bison needed an overtime goal from Kyle Fiordaliso to beat Prospect 2-1 Friday in a soccer-football homecoming doubleheader in Mount Prospect.
Fiordaliso scored the game-winner, his second goal of the season, with 1:15 remaining in overtime when he headed in a corner kick from Bryan Soderholm, who scored the game's first goal with 18:14 to go in the first half.
BG (5-7-1, 3-2 MSL) played without Urban, its leading scorer with five goals. Urban missed the game after suffering an injury to his right knee in a 4-0 win over Conant on Sept. 25. Urban scored that game's final goal but collided with a Cougars player later in the game. BG's other scorers against Conant were Danny Ontiveros, Ryan Franz and Soderholm.
Urban said he expects to return for BG's scheduled game against Rolling Meadows on Monday.
"It's a great feeling. We came out strong and came together," Fiordaliso said. "We stepped up (without Urban). We did what we had to do. The whole team came together."
Fiordaliso previously scored in a 2-2 tie with Crystal Lake South on Sept. 2 in the Lake Park tournament.
The Bison, who won for the third time in their last four games, took advantage of Prospect (3-8-1, 1-5-1), which ended a six-game winless streak with a 2-0 win over Hoffman Estates on Sept. 25 to earn its first MSL victory.
Cesar Guerrero, who scored against the Hawks, tapped the ball in for Prospect's only goal against the Bison. Guerrero converted off Eric Rusk's chip shot with 7:00 remaining in the first half. Mike Rusin scored the Knights' other goal against HE.
"It's really frustrating. It's kind of the story of our season," Prospect coach Kurt Trenkle said of the overtime loss. "Something happens and that's the game. Our work ethic is incredible. After every devastating loss, we come back. This team has a lot of heart."
Senior goalkeeper Mark Ressl made his season debut and shut out the Hawks. Ressl returned to start against BG, but gave up the goal to Soderholm after Ressl missed a sliding save that Soderholm controlled and then struck for an easy open-net goal. In a previously planned move, Trenkle returned regular starter Jimmy Brault to keeper for the second half.
The sectional seeding meetings for boys soccer teams were scheduled Wednesday night.
