Before the season, King coach Lonnie Williams said this team could be special. They continue to prove him correct as the Jaguars came from behind to defeat Brooks 18-17 in the opening round of the Public League playoffs Friday at Eckersall Stadium.
Devonte Rimmer saved the day for the Jaguars (8-1) as he scored three touchdowns and gained 247 yards on 13 carries. Rimmer scored the game’s first touchdown on a 74-yard run.
Brooks took the lead 9-6 on a 35-yard field goal by Jesus Mirande and 25-yard touchdown reception to Demerius Flakes from quarterback Ahmad Bradshaw with 10:35 remaining in the second quarter. Rimmer put the Jaguars up for good on a 54-yard run late in the second quarter then added a 28-yard run to give King an 18-9 lead.
Bradshaw connected with Damoni Ware for 12 yards to cut the lead to 18-17. The King defense blocked two field goal attempts late in the fourth quarter to preserve the win.
“We just put too much into the season to allow ourselves to lose in the first round of the playoffs,” said Rimmer. “The offensive line did a great job.”
Williams said “This was a total team effort. They didn’t surprise us, Williams said. “They are a very talented team. We were without our defensive leader, Kahari Logan, who is out with an injury and they stepped up and played King football.”
“We didn’t take it and they refused to lose,” said Brooks coach James Brown.
Warren Gatewood led Brooks with 12 tackles.
