Tinley Park eases past Bremen

Tinley Park forward Shayla Joyner admitted it was a bit hard to get fired up for Monday's game with Bremen considering the Titans defeated the Braves 62-20 just nine days earlier.

Then again, it was the freshman's playoff debut.

Joyner started her postseason career in fine fashion, scoring 10 of her game-high 12 points in the first half as Tinley Park cruised to a 55-21 win in a Class 3A Bremen Regional quarterfinal.

"We just had to work hard in practice and bring intensity from the start," said Joyner, who also had seven rebounds. "It was really important to get off to a good start."

Bre Nunn added nine points and five rebounds and Marian Blackman had all eight of her points in the first half for the 13th-seeded Titans (9-14), who will meet No. 4 seed Rich South today in a sectional semifinal.

Sarah Webster scored nine points to lead Bremen, which finished 4-23.

Bremen had no answer for Joyner early. She scored six straight points, twice converting putbacks, to help the Titans race to a 10-3 lead.

Late in the opening quarter, it was Nunn doing the work for the Titans as she scored the final five points of the frame, including a 3-point play, to push the edge to 19-7 after one.

"I wanted to come out and leave it all on the floor," Nunn said. "I'm a senior and I want to leave a good impression."

Blackman also had six points in the opening period.

"Our goal was to come out fast and not give (Bremen) a chance to stay in the game," Tinley Park coach Jason Becker said. "Shayla really got us going in the post and we looked for her in the first half."

Seven different Titans scored in the second quarter as they stretched the lead to 35-13.11 Tinley Park played got into the scoring column in all.

Sophomore Maggie Hayes scored all eight of Bremen's second-half points.

"We think we're prepared for (today)," Becker said. "If Marian and Diamond (Beatty) come out strong, I think we'll have a chance."

Beatty added six points and seven rebounds.
