Williams, Carter team to lift Bremen

Bremen coach Matt Meany is confident in his team's go-to inbound plays, for good reason.

With Wednesday's South Suburban Blue game against Oak Forest tied with one second left, the Braves made a buzzer-beating win look easy.

Inbounding from the baseline, Quad Williams found a cutting Sherman Carter with a perfect bounce pass and Carter beat the clock with a layup to give the visiting Braves a 56-54 win over their District 228 rival.

"That's a special play we know how to run so we were comfortable with it," Meany said. "I think (Oak Forest) was looking for the lob and we caught them off guard. Quad made one of the better passes of his high school career."

Carter's game-winner capped a huge second half for the senior guard, who scored 15 of his game-high 24 points after the break.

"Quad made a great pass and it was a great play call," Carter said. "It was a total team effort tonight. We've had a streaky season and we hope this win can get us going."

Carter, who also had 10 rebounds, scored the final eight points for Bremen, including a long two-point jumper that tied the game at 54 with 1:50 to go.

Williams added 13 points for the Braves (6-17, 5-5).

Scott Korosic paced Oak Forest (5-17, 2-8) with 18 points on 6-of-11 shooting from behind the arc.

Korosic was lights-out early, knocking down four straight three-point attempts in the first quarter.

Strong inside play from Kyle Funkhouser (11 points) and Tim Loeding (10 points, seven rebounds), who combined for 10 second-quarter points, helped the Bengals to a 31-26 halftime lead.

The Braves picked up their intensity on the offensive glass and the defensive end in the third quarter, forcing seven turnovers in the period and taking a 43-42 lead to the final quarter.

Korosic hit two more treys in the fourth, his last giving the Bengals a 54-51 lead with 2:53 to go. It was all Carter the rest of the way.

The Braves also converted a baseline inbounds play into a Carter three-pointer at the halftime buzzer.

"Them scoring five points on us in those special teams plays was really disappointing," Oak Forest coach Matt Manzke said. "Bremen came out in the second half with a lot of energy."

Isaac Stringer added nine points for Bremen.
