NORTH JUDSON — North Judson has some familiar names on the field. As for Boone Grove, the Wolves have a lot of new names, as this is their first full year of playing football.
In the Bluejays’ 63-28 win over the Wolves on Friday night the familiar names stood out, such as Kendall Hochstedler, the bruising running back who ran for 106 yards on 12 carries, and hauled the ball over the goal line three times, adding one two-point conversion.
Sophomore Caston Sanchez, in his second year as a quarterback also was impressive. He was 6-of-10 for 116 yards and hooked up with junior Wes Derflinger for a touchdown pass, while junior Mike Minix caught a two-point conversion pass. Minix has been simply outstanding on defense, with two interceptions Friday night, and a total of six in four games.
“Those two young men, juniors, their commitment in the offseason has been impressive,” said coach Kevin Cox. “They’ve done a great job in track, and in the weight room. It is good to see good people do good things.”
Derflinger ended up with two touchdowns and missed out on a great run for a third when it was called back on a penalty. He credited the offensive line, made up of a rotation of six players (Dustin Knapp, Chance Heims, Evan Howard; and three guards, Matt Randash, Caleb Robbins and James White). That line, according to Cox, has improved with each game.
Senior Brenner Cruce scored three TDs, two in the first quarter, one a 15-yard run for the game’s first score, and later, a 26-yard reception from Sanchez. He added a 62-yard scramble in the third quarter.
By the fourth quarter, Judson led 63-14, and the officials called for a running clock.
Boone Grove is still learning.
“Our quarterback, Dean Hill did a nice job,” said Wolves coach Tony Tinkel.
Hill threw a TD pass to Cody Poynter, and scored on a 25-yard run. Hill also connected with Kyle Wolfe on a 19 yard pass, and also scrambled for a 25-yard TD run. Freshman Jake Morris ran in for the final Boone score.
The Jays now have won three straight after a difficult loss to Glenn, while the Wolves are 0-4.
