Bolingbrook tops Lincoln-Way West

Five losses in the first seven games of the season wasn't the start Bolingbrook had in mind after the Raiders graduated only one player from last year's 21-10 team.
"Our first couple of games our bats weren't there,'' Bolingbrook softball coach Jean Ryan-Moak said. "We were swinging at stuff in the dirt.''
The bats were there in enough crucial situations Monday afternoon to give Bolingbrook a 6-4 victory over visiting Lincoln-Way West in a Southwest Suburban crossover game.
Marisa Cinquepalmi ripped a two-out, two-run double in the first inning to put the Raiders ahead 2-0 and Ashley Deluca doubled to drive in two runs in the third for a 5-3 lead.
"It was a first-pitch strike,'' Cinquepalmi said of her RBI hit. "I don't believe in taking any strikes. I just saw it and hit it.''
Cinquepalmi's third RBI came on a sacrifice fly in the third inning that tied the game 3-3 two batters before the Raiders took the lead for good.
"Suspenseful,'' Cinquepalmi said with a smile. "We got it together today. We're finally starting to get on track.''
Senior Eryn Pondo pitched a complete game for Bolingbrook (3-5) and also contributed at the plate, going 1-for-2 with two runs scored.
Pondo pitched out of a jam in the second inning, getting a popout and a called third strike before a soft liner was caught for the third out with runners on second and third.
Lincoln-Way West (5-4) put together a three-run third inning to take a brief 3-2 lead. Alex Carr (3-for-4) had an RBI single and Sarah Clark's triple drove in Carr.
Lincoln-Way West finished the game with 12 hits, but questionablebaserunning stopped two rallies.
"A couple of times we had runners in scoring position and didn't make it happen,'' Lincoln-Way West coach Heather Novak said. "You have to give them credit. They made the plays when they had to.''
Pondo retired the first two hitters in the seventh on popouts. West threatened with three straight singles, butabaserunningmistake after the third hit led to the final out.
"There were a few things we could have done differently,'' Novak said.
With a couple errors and a baserunning mistake of their own, the Raiders are still a work in progress.
"We need to figure out how to pull it all together consistently,'' Ryan-Moak said.
