There was Homewood-Flossmoor.
And then there was everybody else.
The host Vikings pulled off a clean sweep Saturday, winning top honors in all seven brackets at the SouthWest Suburban Blue championships.
From No. 1 singles to No. 4 doubles, H-F fielded the title winner, claiming the conference crown with 42 points. Lockport (24) placed second, while Sandburg (17) took third. Lincoln-Way East (14), Bolingbrook (5) and Joliet (5) rounded out the scoring at the two-day tournament.
“I thought they stepped up, and I think that we played well,” H-F coach Don Baron said. “We expected to play well, we executed, and it worked out pretty good for us.”
H-F’s power game proved overwhelming in the top brackets. The Vikings’ top-seeded Adesuwa Osabuohien used a strong volley for a 6-1, 6-3 win over Bolingbrook’s Nneka Onyejaka in the No. 1 singles championship.
At No. 1 doubles, the hard-hitting duo of Danielle Dixon and Dana Shannon recorded seven aces en route to a 6-4, 6-2 title match victory over Lockport’s Kat Samardzija and Kelsey Forkin.
“I think we’re both great singles players and that’s like a main focus ... our serve,” Dixon said. “It’s a key component, so we really bring that to the doubles. That’s our main weapon.”
Faith Huckabee romped past Lockport’s Caroline Plecki 6-0, 6-1 for the No. 2 singles title, while Sierra Proby won at No. 3 singles for H-F. Colleen Kenney and Allison Lessener (No. 2 doubles), Timara Maxweel and Jackie Winkler (No. 3 doubles) and Mya Sykes and Jessie Winkler (No. 4 doubles) helped the Vikings complete the sweep.
Lockport’s Judy Standford and Michelle Biciste fought back from being down five points in the second set to win their opening match at No. 3 doubles. The pair advanced to the championship round.
“We knew we had to come ready to go,” Lockport coach Bob Champlain said. “In order to get that second place you’ve got to have a solid team up and down the lineup.”
