Homewood-Flossmoor used one big run in each half to take control of a tight game — and conference race — Friday night.
The Vikings bounced back after a two-point third period with a strong stretch run in a 54-49 SouthWest Suburban Blue win at Bolingbrook.
“We came out in the second half and looked like we never got out of bed. It looked like we didn’t know what we were doing out there,” H-F coach Jim McLaughlin said.
In the final eight minutes the Vikings (17-6, 10-1) had three baskets after offensive rebounds as they outscored Bolingbrook 23-12. Point guard Tyrone Sherman had nine of his 16 points in that period for H-F.
H-F ended a six-game Bolingbrook winning streak and took a two-game conference lead over the Raiders (13-9, 8-3) despite trailing 37-31 entering the fourth.
“We didn’t fold,” McLaughlin said. “Down the stretch, we regrouped. It was nice to see us clean the glass.”
H-F outrebounded Bolingbrook 16-8 in the second half, when Tim Williams (11 points, 12 rebounds) had 10 boards.
“When we went to the zone, we got misses, but down the stretch they got a lot of putbacks,” Bolingbrook coach Rob Brost said. “If we get one of those, it’s a different game.”
A four-point halftime lead quickly disappeared as H-F struggled against the Bolingbrook zone. The Vikings missed all five of their field-goal attempts and had eight turnovers in the third period.
H-F outshot Bolingbrook 58 percent to 32 percent in the first half but was clinging to a 29-25 lead thanks to a 10-point half from the Raiders’ Nick Malonga (game-high 18 points) and a late three-pointer from Chad Cooke.
An eight-point H-F run, which included consecutive baskets from Antonio Bishop, gave the Vikings a 29-22 lead that seemed huge at the time, considering no team led by more than four points prior to that.
