The Lane boys soccer program had its first moment in the spotlight Monday night on the Northwest Side, and the Indians made the most of it.
A five-goal outburst in the second half was the highlight in an 8-1 drubbing of Bogan in the first night game at Lane Stadium for the boys soccer team.
''The city needs more facilities like this to help the sport gain the exposure it deserves,'' Lane coach Andrew Ricks said.
''It's great the stadium has turf now and no crown on the field to allow for a smooth, even soccer surface. This is great for the kids and the program.''
Lane (5-3-1) came out firing, and junior Henry Gomez paced the attack with three goals and three assists to help the Indians end a three-game scoring drought.
''It was nice to finally score again,'' said Gomez, whose team was shut out by Fenwick, Prosser and Lake Zurich during that stretch. ''This was a lifetime experience. Being able to play under the lights here and scoring three goals is something I'll always remember.''
Renzo Ayala, Jesus Solis and Gomez scored in the first half to give Lane a commanding 3-1 cushion at the break.
Behind the play of Gomez, Ricks' crew blew the game open in the second half thanks to additional goals from Eric Morales (two) and Gustavo Guzman.
''We have a good team, but the difference this year compared to last is we don't have the star players,'' said Ricks, whose program is the favorite to earn the No. 1 seed at Wednesday's Class AA St. Ignatius Sectional seeding meeting.
''It would've been nice if we had spread the eight goals out over the last couple of games, but hopefully this game will get us back on track.''
