Bishop Noll held off conference rivals Wheeler and North Newton to capture the Greater South Shore Conference girls track and field title Tuesday. The three schools battled throughout the meet, but in the end it was Noll holding on for the win.
Bishop Noll got the victory with 124 points, just edging out Wheeler with 120 and North Newton with 101.
“I am extremely pleased with the win,” Bishop Noll coach Karl Repay said. “We came out strong and focused and our girls did an outstanding job, especially Asya Hobbs. She is such a remarkable athlete and person I am very happy for her tonight.”
The shining star for Bishop Noll was the freshman Hobbs, who competed in the high jump, 100-, 200-, and 400-meter events. Hobbs dominated, capturing first place in all four events.
“I felt real good today and participated in the high jump, 100 and 200, and for the first time in the 400-meter dash, but I was confident and with warmer weather we all were able to run better than we have been of late,” Hobbs said.
“As a team, we came out strong and performed well and we are truly happy with the conference title.”
Wheeler had an impressive performance by junior Fannisha Hurt. Hurt was able to finish second in the 100- and 200-meter dashes to give her team the points needed to stay close to Bishop Noll.
North Newton was impressive, especially in the field events, as the Spartans had solid performances from Chole Vanderwall winning the shot put, Sarah West winning the long jump, and Sarah Levy placing second in the discus.
Bishop Noll is the only school without an outdoor track and has found it difficult to find time to practice indoors, sharing the gym with other sports teams.
“We have been challenged with finding time to practice sharing our gym with the boys track team, the softball and baseball teams, but the girls really worked hard and took the challenge and the hard work paid off for them tonight,” Repay said.
