HAMMOND -- The trip up I-65 turned out to be well worth the hassle, as Rensselaer cruised to a 54-24 victory Friday over Bishop Noll in a Class 2A sectional game.

Rensselaer, a much bigger and stronger team, utilized that advantage to its favor in establishing a solid running attack that not only put points on the board, but kept possession of the ball.

The weather also affected the game because Noll typically will throw the ball, but could not under these conditions.

That played into Rensselaer's favor.

"We are fortunate to have backs that can run the ball and we came in with that as our game plan and I am pleased for the effort of all my players tonight," Rensselaer coach Chris Meeks said.

Rensselaer came out in its traditional running attack and marched upfield to the Noll 9-yard line.

A fumble recovered by Noll turned the tide and Noll went on the offensive attack.

A spectacular 66-yard touchdown run from Scott Upshaw gave Noll the early 6-0 lead.

Rensselaer (5-5) came right back and hit the running game hard.

With the trio of Ben Ahler, Josh Wollack and Justin Bohannon, the Bombers scored four times in the first half.

Noll had an opportunity to score late in the second quarter, moving the ball down to the Bombers 9-yard line.

But Rensselaer's defense turned up the heat and denied Noll the end zone, ending the halftime with three Bombers ahead 32-6.

Rensselaer continued its dominance on the ground in the second half, pounding the ball against the tired Noll defense, adding three more touchdowns.

Noll (3-7) got on the board with three touchdowns of their own on some spectacular plays.

The first came from Byron Jordan who returned a kickoff 85 yards.

Upshaw caught a 73-yard pass from Eric Escamilla to cap off the Noll scoring.

Rensselaer was led by the running of Justin Bohannon, who scored four of the Bomber touchdowns and rushed for 141 yards.
