Nick Burdi struck out six in four innings to lead visiting Downers Grove South to an 8-3 victory Monday against Benet in the season opener for both teams.
Burdi, a 6-4, 205-pound senior right-hander who's considered one of the top pitching prospects in the country, allowed one run, one hit, walked one and hit a batter. His fastball was clocked as high as 95 mph.
I thought the first inning was kind of shaky, but I settled down,'' Burdi said. I felt strong. I worked really hard in the offseason.''
Senior right-hander Matt Wivinis completed the victory by allowing two runs and two hits in three innings.
At the plate, Andrew Hietpas went 3-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored, and Wivinis had a double, a triple and an RBI for the Mustangs.
