Caitlin Cann, Peotone’s 5-foot-3 point guard, and backcourt mate Brittney Campione each had 11 points and eight rebounds Wednesday night as the Blue Devils rolled to a 52-29 victory over Coal City in the semifinals of the Class 2A Beecher Regional.

Peotone controlled the game and the boards from the outset, leading 16-6 after the first quarter and 29-16 at halftime.

“The faster we go, we feel the better opportunities we can get,’’ Peotone coach Steve Strough said.

Peotone (25-3) had a decisive 25-12 rebounding advantage in the first half as seven players made the scoresheet.

“They were on a different level than we were,’’ Coal City coach Brad Schmitt said. “Give them credit; they outmuscled us for 32 minutes.’’

Cann opened the game with back-to-back three pointers and hit another trey as the half ended.

“The big basket was at the end of the first half,’’ Schmitt said. “It kind of took the wind out of our sails.’’

Peotone kept Coal City deflated by starting the second half with an 8-3 run to take a commanding 37-19 lead. Campione scored six of those points.

Kayce Nagel had seven points and Shelby Maupin six points off the bench for Peotone. Emily Halliday led Coal City (15-15) with 15 points and 10 rebounds.

Seneca 52, Beecher 44

In the second semifinal, Lexi Brown and Alyssa Applebee combined for 44 points to earn the Lady Irish (21-8) a spot in Friday’s title game. Brown scored 23 points and Applebee 21.

Beecher got to within 49-39 with less than two minutes left after Seneca had taken a 43-26 lead into the fourth quarter.

Seneca outscored Beecher 17-8 in the second quarter to grab a 27-15 halftime advantage. Brown (15 points) and Applebee (12) did all the scoring for Seneca in the first half. Applebee hit a three-pointer to end the second quarter.
