Batavia wins first sectional title

The wind made it a chilly day for the West Aurora Girls Tennis Sectional on Saturday, yet the Batavia Bulldogs didn’t seem to notice — they were only interested in holding the plaque representing their first ever sectional championship.
Batavia finished with a score of 31, ahead of Oswego East (23) and West Aurora (14), who rounded out the top three.
It helped immensely for Batavia that the two pairs squaring off in the doubles final were Bulldogs. The duos hated to battle each other, but a winner had to be crowned. In the end, the senior team of Hannah Potter and Kaitlin Mills was victorious over the freshman/sophomore combo of Jennifer Mizikar and Amelia Cogan in straight sets.
“These girls have worked really hard,” said Batavia coach Brad Nelson. “They’ve put a lot of time in on the court. Next week, they’ll get a chance to show the rest of the state how far they’ve come.”
Fueling Oswego East’s second-place finish was the singles tournament victory by sophomore Sajela Harlow.
With Batavia players Miranda Grizaffi and Liza Fruendt left to play in the consolation match, Harlow battled it out with West Aurora sophomore Emily Stefancic for the championship. It took three sets to decide a winner, but Harlow won the tiebreaker on the final set 7-3.
“I’m pretty happy that I got (the consolation championship),” said Harlow. “I worked pretty hard and so did Emily, so it was fun playing it out to see who got it.”
Oswego East won the consolation doubles match by default. Finishing in positions four through 10 were Rosary (12), Yorkville (10), IMSA (8), Waubonsie Valley (6), Aurora Central Catholic (4), Oswego (2) and East Aurora (0).
