Admittedly, her nerves were going crazy. This was the most pressure she had been under in her life. She had so much to live up to. And then she sank the winner.
In a dramatic playoff hole between three golfers at the Sycamore Golf Club on Wednesday to solidify the last spot in next week’s sectional at Cog Hill, Kaneland freshman Tori Guyton put up a par five to earn a trip to Lemont.
“Since my older sister (Hayley) made it to state all four years, I am going to try to do the same,” an ecstatic Guyton said.
The team play at the Burlington Central girls golf regional was a little more predictable as Wheaton Warrenville South posted a 340 and advanced to the sectional along with St. Charles North (343) and St. Charles East (351).
Geneva narrowly missed the cut by finishing fourth (373), but Vikings sophomore Abby Luchtenburg qualified individually by posting an 82. If she is to have success next week, her approach will be different than her showing at last year’s sectional.
“I don’t have to go for every pin every time,” Luchtenburg said.
Batavia’s Tara Cullerton shot an 80 — which included an impressive 35 on the back nine — also earning a spot in sectionals.
Cullerton, who put up the fourth-best round of the day, lofted a shot on the 11th hole that cut through the trees and laid up on the green which she felt ignited her momentum the rest of the way.
Of her 230-yard-plus drives, Cullerton said she will look to bring her extended tee shot next week.
“I just recently started hitting the ball a lot farther,” the senior Bulldog said.
