Amid last-second chaos under the basket and an opposing center a half-foot taller, Barrington point guard Brad Zaumseil fought for a rebound and flipped in the game-winning layup as time expired Friday night.

The dramatic buzzer-beater gave the Broncos its second lead of the night, and proved just enough to steal a 45-44 win at Schaumburg, which led the MSL West heading into the night.

“Coach always says crash the boards,” Zaumseil said of the final play. “He told me multiple times today actually.”

Despite finding himself under the glass for the game-winner, the play also started with the ball in Zaumseil’s hands on the other end of the floor.

After Schaumburg missed a free throw with 14 seconds left, Zaumseil darted the other way. He found teammate Robby Vollman on the right wing, who opted against a long shot to deliver a cross-court pass to Mark Bennett flashing toward the hoop. Bennett’s jump shot from the elbow was off target, but Zaumseil was waiting underneath for the put-back.

“I just had to get it up quick,” Zaumseil said of the final moments. “I didn’t know how much time was left.”

The Broncos bench stormed the court to celebrate the road win, which lifted the Broncos to a tie atop the MSL West at 2-1 (6-3 overall).

The Saxons fell to 2-1, 6-3, despite a dominant performance by its 6-foot-5 center Jimmy Lundquist. He scored a game-high 22 points, which featured a barrage of four consecutive three-pointers in the second quarter.

Schaumburg scored the first seven points of the game, went on a 6-0 run to start the second quarter and rattled off eight straight to open the third quarter.

But Barrington rallied back all night.

“I was really proud of how we hung in there in the first half,” Broncos coach Bryan Tucker said. “Our kids kept fighting and fighting.”

Zaumseil led Barrington with 10 points, Bennett added eight and Scott Nelson contributed six.

The Broncos bench also was a key factor Friday. Reserves Ryan Carroll, Robby Vollman and Taylor Ganzer combined to contribute 16 points as the Broncos featured eight players on the score sheet.

“We have kids that we know can step in,” Tucker said. “We were really pleased. Some kids came off the bench and just did a nice job - and some that might that not even show up in the box score but just did things right on the court.”
