Boys Basketball: Hoffman Estates stuns Barrington in overtime
Despite giving up an 11-point lead in the fourth quarter Friday night, Hoffman Estates rallied back in overtime to earn its first Mid-Suburban West victory of the season with a 77-73 upset over Barrington.
Hoffman Estates was able to post a 15-11 overtime advantage despite losing its leading scorer, Austin Terry, who fouled out with 32 seconds left in regulation after tallying 24 points.
“I knew my team would just pull it out, I believe in my teammates. I trust my team,” Terry said after celebrating with his teammates. “Like I said before, I trusted my team, I trusted the program, I believe in my team and we got the ‘W.’”
Barrington had chances to steal the win at the end of four quarters and again in overtime, but senior John Schneider misfired on two three-point attempts from the corner.
With little voice left, Hoffman Estates coach Luke Yanule echoed the same thoughts as his leading scorer.
“Sure you want a guy like Austin in the game, but Austin would be the first to say that he believes in our team,” Yanule said. “We all do and our guys stepped up and made some shots. More importantly, we defended the way we thought we could and envisioned back in May. We have a good group of kids. They are high-character kids and they work hard.”
In the extra minutes, Hoffman Estates (7-13, 1-8) was sparked by senior Alex Bonds’ six points, which gave him 11 on the night. Junior Connor Schwarz chipped in four in overtime to finished with 12. Schwarz knocked down a three-pointer to open the overtime and senior Sam Wilks converted a three-point play to provide the late cushion.
Barrington (16-7, 7-2) took a three-point lead into the half. But Hoffman Estates exploded early in the fourth quarter going on a 9-0 run that eventually turned into a 52-41 Hawks lead with five and a half minutes remaining.
But it only took Broncos seniors Schneider, Mark Bennett, Jackson Wegner, Taylor Ganzer and junior Brad Zaumseil two-and-a-half minutes to erase the double-digit deficit, pulling Barrington to a tie at 56-56 with three minutes left.
“As bad as we played, to get down nine, we played that well to (get back in it),” Broncos coach Bryan Tucker said. “We’re still searching for consistency. We aren’t anywhere near that. We keep shooting ourselves in the foot (with) silly turnovers, silly fouls, poor defense… It’s tough to win that way.”
Zaumseil and Schneider led the Broncos with 19 apiece while Bennett added 16.
