Wheaton Academy guard Collin Roy wasn’t feeling his shooting touch in warmups before Saturday’s game with Aurora Christian, but when the game started he sure found it.

The junior made nine of his 11 field goal attempts — including 6-for-8 from behind the three-point arc — on his way to a career-high 26 points as the Warriors picked up a 71-57 road win.

“My teammates just worked to get me open, we were all feeling it,” Roy said. “I wasn’t making many shots during warmups, I don’t know what happened but I kept shooting.”

Roy wasn’t the only one who found the range for the Warriors. As a team, they shot 13-for-26 from behind the arc to set a season high for treys. Lars Olson hit four of his seven attempts and scored 18 points, while Cameron Harvey knocked down two and finished with 20.

The game was a direct contrast to the last time the teams met, which was a low-scoring affair. Wheaton Academy made some adjustments in its zone offense and added a runner along the baseline.

Ball movement was also a key. Whether it was moving the ball around the perimeter or penetrating and kicking the ball back out, the Warriors made the extra pass.

The second quarter was the key, as the Warriors (11-8 overall, 5-1 Suburban Christian Blue) turned a one-point deficit after the first eight minutes into a 10-point lead (38-28) at the break. Wheaton Academy had four different players hit threes and totaled six overall and 26 total points in the period.

The Eagles, meanwhile struggled offensively against the Warriors’ man defense. ACHS did score 18 points in the fourth quarter and got within 12 (69-57) when Ryan Suttle nailed a three with about two minutes to go, but just never found a rhythm most of the night.

C.J. Schutt and Cory Windle scored 15 points apiece to lead ACHS (12-5, 3-3), while Suttle posted 10.

“They were locked in, give them credit,” said Eagles’ coach Steve Hanson. “They played better defense than we did. We were selfish on offense and that really hurt because we never made them defend for long periods of time. We wanted them to expend some energy on defense but never did. Our shots weren’t horrible but there were better ones there.”
