Winless Oak Lawn handed host Argo their first loss and spoiled its homecoming in a thrilling 21-14 overtime win in Summit.
Oak Lawn quarterback Mike Emanuelson threw for two touchdowns and ran for one score.
"We never gave up, kept fighting, and stayed strong when we needed to," said Emanuelson, who completed 11 of 20 passes and threw for 114 yards.
After a scoreless first quarter, Oak Lawn (1-4, 1-2 South Suburban Red) scored on a nine play, 57-yard drive that was capped off by a six-yard touchdown pass from Emanuelson to Tom Madsen.
Argo (4-1, 2-1) struck back on a 53-yard Kaylen Sturges touchdown run, but failed to make a two point conversion attempt and trailed 7-6 at halftime.
Two Argonaut touchdowns were called back on costly penalties in the first half.
After a scoreless third quarter, the Spartans recovered a Sturges fumble and drove 81 yards when Emanuelson leapt into the end zone on a quarterback sneak on fourth and one to take a 14-6 lead.
Argo managed to come back on a flea flicker play that featured Joe Ellingham passing to Sturges for a 56-yard touchdown score. Sturges then ran for a two point conversion to tie the contest 14-14 with 1:30 remaining in the fourth quarter.
The Spartans scored in overtime on a 14-yard touchdown strike to Colin Altenburg.
The game ended when Ellingham's pass was picked off on fourth and 15.
"We wanted to score as fast as we could and stop them on defense," said Emanuelson.
Sturges rushed for 231 yards on 35 carriers in the losing effort for the Argonauts.
