WW South overpowers West Aurora

The offensive struggles continued for the West Aurora softball team Monday as the Blackhawks dropped a 9-1 DuPage Valley Conference decision to Wheaton Warrenville South.

“It is frustrating, but give the other team credit, they hit my pitches,” said losing pitcher Christina Hunger, who gave up six runs on six hits in her 2⅔ innings pitched. “We haven’t been scoring a lot of runs. We’re lacking the big hit. We’ve had games where we’ve left a lot of runners. We’re trying to point out the positives and working hard to pick ourselves up.”

West Aurora, which hasn’t scored more than two runs in a DVC game, dropped to 4-15 overall and 0-7 through the first round of play in the league.

The Tigers, meanwhile, climbed to 17-11 and 3-4, breaking out behind a 10-hit attack off Hunger and reliever Frannie Evischi that featured five doubles.

“All our DVC games have been close,” Wheaton Warrenville South coach Denise McCance said. “We’ve had a couple go extra innings and only one, a 4-2 loss to West Chicago, has been decided by more than one run.

“We’ve been hitting the ball pretty well but we’re not always scoring in key situations.”

Minnesota recruit Hannah Granger started and went four innings, giving up one hit to pick up her 10th win against eight losses. Bekah Monday, who had a pair of doubles and drove in three runs to lead that offense, pitched the final three innings. She was touched for an unearned run in the seventh, thanks to two walks and two errors.

Kristy Santora, Claire Lineberger and Jenny Langill also had doubles for the Tigers.

“They were a terror today,” West Aurora coach Sara Nagy said of the Tigers. “They just out-hit us.

“It’s disappointing because we were coming off one of our better games. We lost 3-2 in nine innings Saturday to Glenbard North and all three runs were unearned. We’ve left a ridiculous amount of baserunners on in conference games, something like 30 in seven games.”

Ally Wayzer and Rachel Williams accounted for the Blackhawks’ two hits, both singles.
