Stingy defense, clutch offense and good special-teams play resulted in a solid overall prep football victory for host Antioch over Wauconda 28-12 on Friday.
The win sets up a key North Suburban Conference Prairie Division first-place clash with host Lakes next Friday for the unbeaten Sequoits (5-0 overall, 2-0 in the NSC Prairie). The Eagles (4-1) are also 2-0 in the league.
Leroy Chapman opened the scoring for the Sequoits on their second possession of the first quarter, rushing in from 11-yards out for a 7-0 lead.
Wauconda bounced back when quarterback Branden Rowe hooked up with Jake Ziokowski on a 60-yard touchdown pass, but the kick failed and Antioch held a slim 7-6 lead.
The Sequoits quickly upped their advantage to 14-6 when Chapman returned the ensuing Bulldogs’ kickoff 85 yards for a score with 7:51 left in the first half. Antioch held the eight-point lead at the break.
The Sequoits took control of the game on their opening drive of the second half, as they marched 68 yards on 14 points before halfback Danny Arden (25 carries, 121 yards) plunged in from 1-yard out for a 21-6 lead.
Blake Harris then made one of the key defensive plays of the game with 5:49 left in the fourth quarter when he picked off a Rowe pass and returned it 22 yards for a touchdown to put the game out of reach at 28-6.
Wauconda added a late touchdown, but it wasn’t enough to prevent Antioch from remaining unbeaten on the season.
Rowe finished the game completing 11-of-25 passes for Wauconda (1-4, 0-3).
