Boys Basketball: Panthers hang on for division victory

Visiting Round Lake squandered all but one point of a nine-point fourth-quarter lead, but held off Antioch 32-29 Friday in a North Suburban Conference Prairie Division game.
The Panthers (5-9 overall, 1-3 in the division) led 27-18 early in the fourth quarter.
But Antioch didn’t quit and William Waschow’s seventh and eighth points of the quarter made it 30-29 with 25 seconds left.
Round Lake then missed two free throws, giving Antioch the ball with 20 seconds left. But Antioch turned the ball over. Round Lake then missed two more free throws with 15 seconds left.
But Antioch then committed its 24th turnover of the game, and Round Lake’s Anthony Gutierrez hit two free throws with 11 seconds left to complete the scoring.
Antioch’s Anthony Formella shot for the tie at the buzzer, but hit iron.
“We have a lot of seniors, but we’re still learning how to win,” said Round Lake coach Jim Roberts. “I don’t care how we did it. Any win is a good win.”
Gutierrez had 12 points of the bench to lead the winners. Juddon Carter had seven on 1-of-12 shooting from the field..
Waschow had 11 for Antioch (3-12 overall).
