What a difference a week makes. After registering one of the biggest wins in school history over Morgan Park, Amundsen was brought back down to earth by Robeson with a 56-0 loss Thursday at Stagg Stadium in a Prairie St conference matchup.
Devon Sanders made sure the Raiders did not take things for granted, as he scored three of his five touchdowns in the first half.
Sanders scored the game’s first score on a six-yard run with 7:37 remaining in the first quarter. He later scored on a 19-yard run with 8:46 remaining in the second quarter and scored the last touchdown of the half as time expired on a six-yard reception from quarterback Jarvis Wright. Clayton Dora took one in from 18 yards around the left end and Wright threw his second touchdown pass of the half connecting with receiver Brian McQqddim as the Raiders built a 36-0 led at halftime.
Sanders scored two more touchdowns in the second half on Robeson’s first two possessions on runs of three and 29 yards. Darius Conner finished off the scoring spree with a two yard run late in the fourth quarter.
“We played well,” said Robeson coach Fabray Collins. “The kids were focused and played with a lot of intensity. We can see that they were down a few players, but our kids did not let up.”
On Sanders’ performance Collins said “It is what you expect from a player like him. He is a great kid. He works hard and never lets up.” Sanders echoed his coach’s sentiments. “We didn’t want to give them any confidence or reason to think they could play with us. I try my best to play as hard as I can from the very first snap to the very last snap,” said Sanders.
Sanders gained 147 yards on 20 carries and had four touchdowns. He also caught four passes for 48 yards and a touchdown. Wright was 8 of 15 for 109 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. The Vikings (2-3, 1-1) played without seven starters.
“We got a little banged up last week against Morgan Park and we had three out who decided they didn’t need to take care of what most important -- school,” said Amundsen coach Grant Jones. “Last week was a big win for us and we have something to build on. We are a young team and we will be fine.”
