Most high school football players don't see the end coming. Ray Skamay is the exception to the rule, and he's OK with it. Lowell's senior quarterback will end his high school career -- and likely his football career, period -- on Saturday afternoon when the Red Devils (13-1) meet Evansville Reitz (14-0) in the Class 4A state championship at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.

They were given an impossible task when the season started -- fill in for two of the best middle linebackers the region had seen, two experienced leaders, two Lowell legends. Filling the shoes of Justin Juarez and David Eastling wasn't just a lot to ask, it was borderline unfair. And so senior Tony DeMario and junior Mike Sekuloski -- and Lowell coach Kirk Kennedy -- did their best to downplay expectations when the season began.

This is a story about Lowell's running game. But this is not a story about Brandon Grubbe. This is a story about the men behind The Man -- or, more accurately, the men in front of him. This is a story about the guys who lead the way for Northwest Indiana's all-time rushing leader. The guys who toil anonymously in the trenches to pry bigger, stronger defenders to the side so Grubbe can slip through the cracks. The guys who, according to no less an authority than Grubbe himself, "make it all happen."

Considering the lore that surrounds the running back in the Lowell football program, it was only fitting that Brandon Grubbe and Mike Pickett stood on the same field last Friday -- one as a player, the other as a coach on the opposing team. Call it a coincidence, if you wish. Lowell football traditionalists likely will point to fate.
Consider this. Had Grubbe not suffered a concussion in the season opener against Crown Point, forcing him to sit out Week 2 against Morton, he most likely would have set the Lowell career rushing record in Week 5 against Highland.
