Prep baseball: Saturday afternoon there was a celebration involving Batavia baseball, but it wasn't the kind you expect. Certainly, the happiness over a 6-4 win against top-seeded Wheaton North in the St. Charles North Sectional Final was evident. There was an appreciation of history as well, as the Bulldogs knew they were just the second Batavia team to ever reach a super-sectional.

Batavia scored seven unanswered runs Thursday to defeat Wheaton Warrenville South 7-2 in a Class 4A baseball sectional semifinal. Brian Krolikowski and Tim Schofield both had two hits and an RBI and Tim Drish added a solo home run to lead the Bulldogs (29-6). Adam Karger (10-0) struck out five, walked one and scattered 10 hits for Batavia.

Batavia's baseball team is no stranger to riding a couple of big arms to the state tournament. It was 2004 when the Bulldogs surprised many by reaching the Elite Eight behind the arms of Joe Mandele and current Kane County Cougars reliever Kenny Smalley. This spring, however, Batavia may have more pitching depth than ever, and it has led to an 19-5 overall record and a dominant 14-1 mark in the Western Sun Conference. Batavia has won 18 of its last 19 games overall.
