Elgin area signings

Settling on a college choice ended up being as easy as throwing strikes for Elgin High softball pitcher Hannah Perryman.

Perryman picked the University of Missouri-St. Louis, signing a letter of intent to continue her playing career, citing a strong offer, the right academic program and the chance to play.

"It's the second-best criminology program in the country," said Perryman, a second-team Courier-News All-Area selection as a sophomore last season. "I'll get to play and it's not too close to home and not too far. It was just a great fit for me."

Perryman is coming off a season in which she helped pitch the Maroons to their first regional title since 1995. She finished 12-13 last season for an Elgin team that finished 12-25 overall.

UMSL is coached by newly hired Brian Levin. The Tritons finished 26-20 overall last year with a 15-11 record in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.

Diaz to UMKC: Elgin resident and former St. Edward standout Lea Diaz is going to Division I University of Missouri-Kansas City. Diaz played two seasons for the Green Wave, leading the team in batting two years ago before transferring to Marian Central.

Bartlett signings: Hawks girls basketball standout Jacki Gulczynski had picked the University of Wisconsin. The 2009-10 Courier News Player of the Year averaged 17.4 points and 9.5 rebounds per game as a junior last season.

Teammate Christina Carlson will be headed to San Jose State to play basketball, while Bartlett boys gymnast Mike Strathern is going to Michigan.

Streamwood signings: A pair of Sabres pitchers have committed to colleges. Josh Harris will go to Villanova, while Blake Hunter will stay closer to home when he throws for Judson University.

Harris was an All-Upstate Eight Conference pick last year, as well as a Courier-News All-Area second-team selection after going 6-4 with a 4.24 ERA and 73 strikeouts. Hunter was also a Courier second-team pick after posting an 8-1 record with a 4.64 ERA with 60 strikeouts in just over 60 innings pitched.

Emma Schmidt, who earlier verbally committed to Central Missouri State, signed her letter of intent to go to that college for basketball.

St. Charles East: Jordan Wetsch will be teeing off for the University of Wisconsin after signing on with the Badgers golf team. Wetsch was an All-State selection this season as he led the Saints to a seventh-place finish in Class 3A, as well as a regional, and Upstate Eight Conference River Division titles.

Meghan Brady will be joining the women's lacrosse program at Robert Morris University.

Jacobs: Scott Cahill signed his letter of intent to play golf at Miami (Ohio) University. Cahill is a two-time All-State pick and also a two-time Fox Valley Conference champion. He was an All-FVC selection all four years of his high school career.

Hampshire: Four-time golf state qualifier Taylor Ellett is headed to Northern Illinois. She finished 20th in the Class 3A field this season.
