More than 40 York student athletes were recently suspended for attending a New Year’s Eve party, where alcohol was present, a school official said Tuesday.
The students, including a significant number of underclassmen, came from different grade levels and from a ‘‘variety of sports,’’ York athletic director Rob Wagner said.
According to York basketball coach Al Biancalana, no varsity boys basketball players were suspended.
Calling the situation ‘‘uncommon’’ at York, Wagner said ‘‘a good portion [of the student-athletes involved] have already served their consequences.’’
Wagner said the suspended were required to sit out 20 percent of his or her season and to perform 20 hours of community service. The remaining students will serve their suspensions during the spring sports season.
