Neuqua Valley's Danny Pawola has always had the same plan heading into a race — follow teammate Chris Derrick.

On Saturday, there was no Chris Derrick to follow.

By himself, Pawoloa did just fine. He separated himself from everyone in the opening mile and ran away in Hornet-Red Devil Cross-Country Invitational, finishing in a time of 15:08.7.

"I was expecting some people to go with me for a bit," Pawola said. "I was by myself for most of the way. … It felt good."

Pawola was one of the nine Neuqua Valley runners in the Top 20 as the Wildcats won the invitational with 32 points.

They were followed by Palatine (82), WW South (101), Minooka (132) and Hinsdale Central (150).

"What I thought was neat was they ran together," Neuqua Valley coach Paul Vandersteen said. "It’s easy to say run together. It's another thing to keep together at this level."

Neuqua Valley's Aaron Beattie (15:25.4), Evanston's Matt Marmol (15:28.5), WW South's Aaron Peck (15:33.3) and Palatine's Chano Bernardo (15:34.7) finished out the top-five individually.
