GURNEE -- Carmel's boys golf team swung back into action Tuesday in a nonconference match against host Warren at treacherous Bittersweet Golf Course, and came away with a 163-173 victory.

The Corsairs, who had a very good 303 team total on this same course at the Warren Invitational last Saturday, passed on the Lake County meet on Monday, which has become the norm for the program.

"Our kids miss a lot of school during the (East Suburban Catholic) conference schedule, so we opt not play in the county meet," said coach Jim Nolan. "We feel we have a pretty good team with a lot of depth."

Playing the challenging Bittersweet layout on Tuesday, Carmel was led by medalist Jack Watson, who fired a 38 for nine holes.

Also scoring for the Corsairs were Alex Pobich with a 40, followed by John Krizmarzick with a 42, Billy White (43) and Mitch Meyer (43).

"The regional is going to be (at Bittersweet) so we'd like to play it a bunch of times," said Nolan. "We didn't play as well as the first time, but we still shot pretty well as a team, with Jack capturing medalist honors."

Carmel will now point toward the rugged East Suburban Catholic Conference, which is led by perennial power St. Viator.

"We have a lot of depth, but going up against the returning state champions in a couple of weeks will be a pretty good test," said Nolan. "We're going to be hosting the ESCC meet at Pine Meadow (in Mundelein), and hopefully, that will give us a couple of strokes."

With five returning golfers from last year's strong team that just missed qualifying for the sectional, Nolan hopes for better results this time around.

"We qualified five individuals last year, but didn't qualify as a team," said Nolan. "Hopefully, this year, we can get go as a team as well."
