Homewood-Flossmoor proved why it is the top-rated girls golf team in the state, setting a course record of 293 in its season opener Monday at Coyote Run in Flossmoor.
Ashley Armstrong beat teammate Michelle Mayer in a one-hole playoff for medalist honors after each shot a two-under-par 69. Using a wedge from 50 yards out, Armstrong put the ball 2 feet from the hole and tapped in for a birdie on a par-4 hole.
"I did everything OK today," said Armstrong, who had 33 putts and three birdies. "I had a lot of opportunities for birdies, but didn’t convert them. This is a good confidence booster for our team, a good way to start the season.”
Rachel Mayer (77) and Ryan Gilley (78) helped out and freshman Lauren Dawson (78) showed the Vikings have five players who can shoot under 80.
Waubonsie Valley (367), Mother McAuley (368), Naperville North (371) and York (378) gave chase.
Providence’s Alexis Wadowski (80), Naperville North’s Marisa Miko (83), Joliet Catholic’s Ashleigh Offerman (86) and Naperville North's Elisa Palluau (86) finished in the top 10.
