With key player Ellen Carberry out with the flu, Mother McAuley coach Jen DeJarld was looking for a player to step up. She found that player in Jessica Falk who led the Mighty Macs to a 26-24, 23-25, 25-10 class 4A sectional championship over Sandburg at Eisenhower.
"Jessica has had a herniated disc which kept her from playing," DeJarld said. "Tonight she played through the pain and stepped up her game in a big way."
Falk closed out the first set with a kill, one of eight she had on the night to lead McAuley (29-10). Along with junior outside hitter MaryKate Styler, Falk helped replace the points that Carberry would normally provide for the Macs. Styler had six kills and two blocks for the match.
The first set proved to be the pivotal one as the Macs trailed 17-12 and 20-16 before making its comeback. Styler provided three kills down the stretch including one to give McAuley its first lead of the set at 22-21.
The deciding third set proved to be anticlimactic as McAuley raced out to a 19-5 lead behind seven unforced errors by Sandburg (32-7). Jessica Galotta (six kills) finished off the match with a kill. Kailey Scott had 23 assists and 10 digs setting for the Macs.
Jenny Buczek led Sandburg with nine kills. MaryKate Imrie contributed 20 assists and 16 digs for the Eagles.
