The opponents and venues change, though the dominant beat goes on for the Payton girls volleyball team marches impressively forward.
Senior Courtney Cunningham registered 13 kills, three blocks and two aces to power Payton to its 16th consecutive victory in their 25-14, 25-11 victory over Gordon Tech in the Class 3A Trinity Sectional semifinal Tuesday night in River Forest.
Sophomore setter Roxanne Rivera contributed 19 assists, three aces and a kill for the Grizzlies (35-1). Freshman Michelle Schultz added five kills for the Grizzlies. Senior outside hitter Ellyse Rodriguez served four consecutive aces to help close out the second game.
Faith Harper had five kills for the Rams (19-17).
Payton advances to play host Trinity (18-15). Caroline Brander’s 13 kills and four blocks powered the Blazers’ 25-16, 25-16 defeat of GCAC rival Regina Dominican.
Setter Jamie Purl added 16 assists and six digs for the Blazers. Katie Trela recorded 10 kills for the Panthers (16-17).
Trinity defeated Payton in the sectional championship last year. The Grizzlies have defeated Trinity in two matches earlier this year.
